NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 5, 2000, time unknown, a Bell 206B helicopter, Canadian registry C-GGUB, was destroyed when it impacted terrain in the Algonquin Provincial Park, near Mattawa, Ontario. The Canadian-certificated pilot, a French national, was fatally injured. Night instrument meteorological conditions most likely prevailed at the time of the accident. No flight plan had been filed for the flight, between MacDonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW), Ottawa, Ontario, and Jack Garland Airport (YYB), North Bay, Ontario. The flight was conducted under Canadian flight regulations. According to an inspector from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the helicopter departed Ottawa at 0311. Regional weather along the intended route of flight included low overcast layers, light rain, mist and ground fog. The pilot did not request radar services; however, the helicopter remained in radar contact until it was about 56 statute miles north-northwest of Ottawa. On May 28, 2001, the helicopter's wreckage was located by a logging survey team, in the northeast quadrant of Algonquin Park, near North Rouge Creek. The wreckage was approximately 120 statute miles from Ottawa, along the track between Ottawa and North Bay. It was located on elevated terrain, and tops of some nearby trees had been cut, and sheared off. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Canada.
