NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 31, 2001, approximately 2340 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 150M, N3385V, registered to Mission Aviation Training Academy and operated by the private pilot as an instructional flight, collided with the terrain near D'Arcy, British Columbia, Canada. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft was substantially damaged and the private pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The flight originated from Ephrata, Washington, at 1930, and was destined for Arlington, Washington. The pilot reported that after departing from Ephrata, he turned north and flew up the valley. Unable to gain sufficient altitude to contact Seattle radio, the pilot continued to the north and eventually crossed the United States/Canadian border. The aircraft entered mountainous terrain and adverse weather as darkness approached. The pilot attempted to maneuver to lower terrain when the aircraft ran out of fuel. Not knowing where he was, the pilot headed towards lights on the ground and was able to land in a field. During the landing roll, the aircraft was substantially damaged. This report is for information purposes only. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Canada.
