NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 5, 2001, approximately 1515 Eastern Daylight Time, a Piper PA-31-310, C-GMTT, was substantially damaged during a collision with terrain after takeoff from the Charlottetown Airport, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The pilot and two passengers sustained fatal injuries, and a third passenger sustained serious injuries. According to Canadian authorities, the flight landed at Charlottetown, one passenger deplaned, and the flight prepared for departure to the Goose Bay Airport, Labrador, Canada. The pilot initiated a takeoff from Runway 28, and the rotation was described by a witness as "delayed." The witness additionally reported that the landing gear was retracted and the airplane's rate of climb was "extraordinarily low." As the airplane approached rising terrain, the pilot entered a right turn. The airplane then descended and impacted a road. This investigation was under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
