NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 4, 2001, at 1700 local time, a Bell UH-1H helicopter, New Zealand registration ZK-HJH, was destroyed upon collision with terrain following a loss of control while in cruise flight near the township of Taumarunui, New Zealand. The commercial pilot and the two crewmenbers aboard the helicopter were fatally injured. The military surplus helicopter (64-13823), was being operated by Wanganui Helicopter, of Wanganui, New Zealand, on a ferry flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed throughout the area at the time of the accident. The 180-nautical mile ferry flight originated from Auckland, approximately 50 minutes prior to the accident, with Wanganui at its intended destination. Witnesses near the accident site reported that the helicopter entered a right turn, with the rate of turn increasing until the helicopter was in a nose-dive towards the ground. The helicopter impacted the ground in a nose down attitude and a post-impact fire destroyed the aircraft. This accident is under the jurisdiction and control of the Government of New Zealand.
