NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On June 18, 2001, approximately 1615 Eastern Daylight Time, a Cessna 210, C-GPMC, was substantially damaged during an in-flight collision with water in Petawa, Ontario. The pilot and passenger sustained fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed for the flight.
According to Canadian authorities, on the day of the accident, the pilot departed the Wawa Airport (CYXZ), Wawa, Ontario, for the final leg of a 10 day trip. He filed a VFR flight plan for the 471 statute mile leg to the Smiths Falls-Montague Airport (CYSH), with an estimated arrival time of 1715 EDT. At approximately 1815, the aircraft had not arrived at CYSH and the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) at Trenton, Ontario was notified. A search was conducted for the airplane and the wreckage was located on June 19, 2001, near the shoreline of Lake Lavielle in Algonquin Park, Ontario.
The accident site was located approximately 130 miles from CYSH, and the wreckage path covered an area 250 feet wide. A review of radio communications revealed the pilot did not attempt to communicate a problem prior to the accident.
The weather reported at 1600, at CFB Petawawa (CYWA), 45 miles to the east included winds from 260 degrees at 6 knots, visibility 15 miles, few clouds at 5,000 feet, broken clouds at 10,000 feet, temperature 23 degrees Celsius, dew point 9 degrees Celsius, altimeter 30.15.
