NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 21, 2001, about 1630 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 402, N3269Q, registered to CAVU Aircraft, Inc., experienced collapse and separation of the nose landing gear on landing at a private airstrip at Walker Cay, Bahamas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and an international visual flight rules (VFR) flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. The airplane was substantially damaged and the private-rated pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The flight originated about 45 minutes earlier from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The pilot reported that when the flight was approximately 4-5 miles from the destination airstrip while flying at 3,000 feet, the left engine quit, followed by the right engine. Attempts to restart both engines were unsuccessful. He did not feather either propeller and continued towards the destination. When landing on what he called a road adjacent to the destination runway was assured, he applied full flaps and touched down at stall speed. During the landing roll on the road which intersections the east/west oriented runway, he applied differential braking and rudder input to roll onto the runway. The airplane rolled across the east/west oriented runway onto sand, collapsing and separating the nose landing gear. The airplane came to rest upright in small scrub brush. He further stated that the flight was inbound to Walker Cay to pick up three of his friends. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of the Bahamas.
