NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 1, 2001, about 0220 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), a Cessna 172, German registration D-EZMB; crashed into a mountainous area near Sonnblick, Austria Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was destroyed by impact forces. The pilot-in-command, the sole occupant of the airplane, was fatally injured. The flight originated from Ried-Kirchheim, Austria, about 50 minutes before the accident. Information obtained during the investigation revealed, that the pilot was not rated for nigh visual flights or instrument condition flights. Evidence showed that the aircraft was in cruise configuration, in straight and level flight, when it collided with a mountainous terrain about 8,300 feet MSL. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Austria.
