NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 16, 2001, at 1210 eastern standard time, a Fokker F28 transport category airplane, Ecuadorian registration HC-BMD, was substantially damaged upon impact with terrain following a loss of directional control while landing at the Tulcan Airport, near Tulcan, in the Republic of Ecuador. The airplane was owned and operated by TAME Airlines of Quito, Ecuador. The airline transport rated pilot, the co-pilot, 3-flight attendants, and 71 passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the scheduled passenger flight for which an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed. The domestic flight originated from the Mariscal Sucre International Airport, near Quito, Ecuador, approximately 30 minutes prior to the accident. The accident investigation is under the control and jurisdiction of the Government of the Republic of Ecuador.
