NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 30, 2001, about 1430 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-32R-300, N6119J, registered to, and operated by a private individual as a Title 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, overran the runway at Rum Cay, Bahamas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft incurred substantial damage, and the airline transport-rated pilot, and two passengers, were not injured. The flight originated from Chub Cay, Bahamas, the same day, about 1205. The pilot stated that she over flew the runway to get a visual indication of the wind direction and speed, and she noted that there was a crosswind of about 10 to15 knots. The pilot further stated that she then made an approach to land, but chose to abort the landing and affect a goaround. She said that during her second approach to land, she made the approach with greater speed in order to compensate for the wind. She said that the landing flare/touch down, as well as the initial rollout were perfect, but as the aircraft neared the middle of the runway, which had been constructed with a "hump", the aircraft became airborne again. She said that she did not feel that it was safe to affect a goaround at that time, so she committed herself to land, and the aircraft overran the runway, colliding with the bushes. According to the pilot, as the aircraft drew near the bushes she turned the aircraft to avoid a head on collision with a tree trunk, and as a result, the wings, the left aft portion of the fuselage, and tail were all damaged. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of the Bahamas. Any further information may be obtained from: Director of Civil Aviation P.O. Box N-975 Nassau, N.P.
