NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 11, 2001, at 1325 coordinated universal time, a Schweizer 300C, OE-XAK, was substantially damaged while hovering near Stockerau, Austria. The foreign-certificated flight instructor sustained minor injuries, and the student pilot was not injured. Weather at the time was unknown, and the flight originated from Stockerau Airport (LOAU), Stockerau, Austria. According to the Austrian Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAAIB), the student pilot could not stop the helicopter from yawing to the left. The flight instructor applied pressure to the right tail rotor control pedal, but the pedal separated at the arm pin attachment holes. The helicopter continued to yaw left, and the flight instructor performed a hard landing. The investigation is under jurisdiction of the AAAIB.
