NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On April 1, 2002, at 1010 universal coordinated time (UTC), a Piper PA-38-112 single-engine airplane, British registration G-CWFC, was destroyed upon impact with an electrical pylon while maneuvering near Newport, South Wales, in the United Kingdom. The pilot and his passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was owned and operated by the Cardiff Wales Flying Club. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal 55-mile cross country flight for which a flight plan was filed. The flight originated from the Cardiff Airport (EGFF) at 1000 UTC, with Shobdon (EGBS) at its intended destination. Cardiff Radar reported they lost contact with the airplane. Search and rescue was initiated after the airplane failed to arrive at its intended destination. The wreckage of the airplane was located in an open field in rolling terrain approximately 4 nm north of the City of Newport, South Wales, by a police helicopter from the County of Gwent. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction and control of the Government of the United Kingdom.
