NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 16, about 0920 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC), or 1720 local time, a Boeing 737-300, Indonesian registration PK-GWA, operated by Garuda Indonesia Airlines as flight 421, experienced a simultaneous loss of power to both engines during approach to the airport in Yogyakarta, on the island of Java in Indonesia. The flight crew performed an emergency landing in the shallow Bengawan Solo River near the city of Solo. The airplane was substantially damaged during the landing. Of the 54 passengers and 6 crewmembers on board, one flight attendant was killed and at least 22 passengers received minor injuries. The accident in being investigated by the Republic of Indonesia; Department of Communications; National Transportation Safety Committee; Gedung Karsa Lt. 2: Jalan Medan Medeka Barat No. 8 JKT 10110; Indonesia.
