NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 6, 2002, at 1200 eastern daylight time, a Cessna P210N, N210BA, registered to and owned by Emmerich Airplanes LLC and operated by the private pilot, collided with trees during a precautionary landing at Treasure Cay International Airport in Treasure Cay, Abaco Island, Bahamas, following a loss of electrical power in flight and collapse of the right main gear after landing. The flight was operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 with an international instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan filed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The pilot and the two passengers were not injured, and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The flight departed Marsh Harbour Airport, Abaco Island, Bahamas, at 1030. After takeoff, the pilot maneuvered over area beaches for several minutes, then commenced a climb on autopilot and contacted air traffic control with the intent of activating filed flight plan. During the climb through 6,000 to 14,000 feet, the pilot noticed the airplane began to descend, the autopilot had disengaged, and the flight instruments had gone dark. The pilot performed the electrical failure checklist procedures, and electrical power to the panel was not restored. The pilot elected to execute a precautionary landing at the nearest airport. The pilot entered a visual traffic pattern and extended the landing gear and flaps, and the pilot and passengers could see the main gear in the down position, and the nose gear could be seen in the down position in a mirror on the wing. After touchdown, the airplane's right main landing gear collapsed, the right wing struck the runway, and the airplane departed the runway to the right and collided with trees. Examination of scene revealed tire skid marks approximately 500 feet prior to the point where the airplane exited the runway. A scrape mark from the right wing was found on the runway approximately 200 feet after the first tire skid marks. After exiting the runway, the airplane traveled approximately 360 feet in a right turn and collided with trees in a heading perpendicular to the runway. The airplane was found with the right main gear collapsed up under the airplane, and the left main gear and nose gear down and locked. Both wings displayed tree impact damage, and the propeller hub was separated. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of the Bahamas.
