NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 4, 2002, about 1015 hours Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), a Boeing 707, Republic of Congo registration 9XR-IS, operated by New Gomair, crashed during an emergency landing about 2 miles from the Bangui International Airport in Bangui, Central African Republic. Of the 25 passengers and crewmembers reported to be on board the airplane at the time of the accident, 23 were reportedly killed and two others were seriously injured. The airplane was reportedly destroyed with no evidence of fire. Daylight visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight crew had reportedly performed the emergency landing attempt because the airplane was experience technical problems during cruise flight. The flight had departed from the city of N'djamena in Chad with passengers and cargo (onions and garlic) and was destined for Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo. The investigation is being conducted by airworthiness authorities in the Central African Republic.
