NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 2, 2002, about 0140 universal coordinated time, a Boeing 767-300, operating as American Airlines flight 900, was undamaged when it diverted to Aeropuerto Internacional Silvo Pettirossi (ASU), Asuncion, Paraguay. The captain, first officer, 12 flight attendants, and 130 passengers were not injured. The flight was operating on an instrument flight rules flight plan from Aeropuerto Internacional de Ezeiza (EZE), Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Miami International Airport (MIA), Miami, Florida. The scheduled international passenger flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 121. According to the operator, the flight was at cruise altitude when the crew and passengers noticed a strong electrical odor. There was also hazy smoke in the cabin near the over wing emergency exits. The flight crew declared an emergency, dumped fuel, and diverted to Asuncion without further incident. Post-flight examination failed to reveal the origin of the problem, which could not be duplicated. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Paraguay.
