NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 10, 2002, at 1440 Universal Cooridinated Time (UTC), 1200 local time, a Douglas DC-8-63, registration N441J, operating as a cargo flight by Arrow Air, collided with barriers during landing rollout on runway 4 at Gander International Airport, Newfoundland-Labrador, Canada. There were no injuries to the five crewmembers on board, and the airplane received minor damage. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed. The airplane had departed Norfolk, Virginia, and was destined for Gander. According to Canadian aviation authorities, the airplane landed on runway 4, which is 10,500 feet in length; however, the available landing area was limited to 9,150 feet by a displaced threshold for runway 22. During landing rollout, the airplane collided with barriers associated with the displaced threshold. The investigation is being conducted by the Canadian Transportation Safety Board, Atlantic Region.
