NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

DURING TAKEOFF, THE ENGINE LOST POWER AT ABOUT 100 FT AGL. THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND IN A NEWLY PLANTED BEAN FIELD. AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE WHEELS SANK INTO SOFT TERRAIN AND THE PLANE NOSED OVER. AN EXAMINATION OF THE AIRCRAFT AND ENGINE REVEALED NO PRECRASH FAILURES. HOWEVER, THE CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR THE ELECTRIC DRIVEN FUEL BOOST PUMP WAS FOUND TRIPPED. THE AIRCRAFT HAD PREVIOUS UNEXPLAINED ENGINE POWER LOSES AND FORCED LANDINGS. TWO SEPARATE MAINTENANCE FACILITIES HAD DONE WORK, UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE OF TROUBLE. THE MOST RECENT HAD OCCURRED ON THE DAY PRIOR TO THIS MISHAP. HOWEVER, A SUBSEQUENT TEST FLIGHT INDICATED NORMAL ENGINE OPERATION.
