NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 20, 2002, approximately 1530 Australian Eastern standard time, a Lancair IV experimental homebuilt airplane, VH-CIV, registered to and operated by a private individual, impacted terrain after a loss of control near Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The airline transport pilot and sole passenger received fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated at the Point Cook airport, Victoria, on December 20, 2002, at 1500. It was reported that the airplane was on its fifth flight since being issued its temporary certificate of airworthiness. The flight commenced with some gentle handling maneuvers, then climbed to approximately 6,500 feet where it commenced stall sequences. After the first stall, the aircraft entered what appeared to be a second "dynamic" stall during the recovery. The aircraft then climbed to approximately 6,300 feet and a second stall was attempted. It was reported that the airplane then appeared to depart controlled flight. A witness described the descent being at an angle of about 45 degrees (nose-down) with the aircraft motion described as "corkscrewing" or "spiraling." The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Australia.
