NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 17, 2003, approximately 1300 universal coordinated time (UTC), a British Aerospace Jetstream 31 twin-engine airplane, Bolivian registration CP-2404, was substantially damaged when it overran the departure end of the runway during an emergency landing after takeoff from the Yacuiba Airport, near Yacuiba, in the Republic of Bolivia. The captain, first officer, and the 19 passengers aboard the airplane were not injured. The airplane was owned and operated by Servicio Aereo Vargas Espana (SAVE) of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, an on-demand air taxi operator. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the domestic revenue flight for which a flight plan was filed. The flight was originating at the time of the accident. Aeronautical authorities reported that the right engine experienced a loss of engine power at V2 during the takeoff roll. The flight crew continued the takeoff and elected to return to the same runway for a single-engine landing. During the emergency landing the airplane overran the departure end of the runway, impacted brush and trees, and came to rest 50-meters from the departure end of the runway. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction and control of the Government of the Republic of Bolivia.
