NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On February 4, 2003, about 1900 coordinated universal time, a Cessna 188B, N6606Q, was substantially damaged during a forced landing near Badger, Newfoundland, Canada. There were no reported injuries to the pilot. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), the airplane was en route from St John's, Newfoundland, Canada, to Goose Bay, Newfoundland, Canada, when the pilot broadcast a MAYDAY on 122.2, declared an engine failure, and gave his coordinates. The pilot then performed a forced landing to a snow covered bog, where the airplane nosed over during the landing. The TSB further reported that the MAYDAY was received by another aircraft which was on a flight from Goose Bay to Deer Lake, Newfoundland. That flight cancelled their IFR clearance and proceeded to the coordinates given by the pilot. The downed airplane was located and one person was observed standing outside the airplane. The pilot also contacted the Deer Lake Airport manger on a satellite phone and provided more accurate coordinates. A helicopter proceeded to the crash site, picked up the uninjured pilot, and transported him to Deer Lake. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Canada.
