NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 24, 2003, about 1445 hours UTC, a Gulfstream Aerospace G-159 (G-1) aircraft, owned operated by African Commuter Services, Ltd. (ACS), collided with the ground during initial takeoff climb from an airstrip in Busia, Kenya. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The pilot, and one passenger were fatally injured. Eleven passengers were seriously injured. The aircraft was destroyed. There was no fire. The destination of the flight was Kisumu, Kenya. The flight originated in Nairobi, Kenya on the morning of Jan 24, 2003 at approximately 1000 hours. The aircraft was flown directly to Busia. After landing the aircraft was taxied to parking area and passengers disembarked for a brief period. Passengers returned to the aircraft and boarded for departure, which has been reported to be between 17:30 and 17:45. Witnesses saw the airplane takeoff on runway 12 and during the ground run the airplane veered right and off the runway onto the adjacent grassy terrain. The airplane became airborne and struck trees, a house antennae, and 25-foot high power lines before it descended and collided with the ground. The airplane struck the ground in a nose down attitude, and came to rest on top of an unoccupied brick dwelling. The investigatiion is under the jurisdiction of the Kenyan Civil Avaition Authority, Nairobi, Kenya. The U.S. Accredited Representative is Dennis L. Jones, NTSB, Washington, D.C.
