NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 15, 2003, about 2250 coordinated universal time, a Beech King Air 200C, VH-AMR, had the left main landing gear separate after it collided with the ocean during an instrument approach to the Coffs Harbour Aerodrome, New South Wales, Australia. Royal Flying Doctor Service, Victoria, Australia, was operating the airplane under the provisions of the Australian civil aviation regulations. Three crew members and one passenger were not injured. The accident occurred at 30 degrees 16 minutes south latitude and 153 degrees 08 minutes east longitude. The airplane was on a GPS (global positioning system) approach in instrument meteorological conditions and heavy rain. The left main landing gear contacted the ocean and separated from the airplane. The crew initiated a go-around. They came around and landed on the nose gear, right main gear, and the left main gear strut. The left main gear, both wings, and the left engine nacelle sustained damage. The accident is under the jurisdiction of and is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
