NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 14, 2003, approximately 1750 Australian eastern standard time, a Cessna 172G single-engine airplane, VH-RPI, was destroyed after impacting terrain following a loss of control near Trefoil, Tasmania. The airplane was registered to and operated by Smithton Aerial Services of Wynyard, Tasmania. The commercial pilot and his three passengers sustained fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the charter flight. The flight departed from the Aircraft Landing Area on Trefoil at an unspecified time. Witnesses reported that the pilot took off on the grass airstrip on a magnetic heading of 280 degrees with a southwesterly wind of 25 knots, gusting to 29 knots, then turned to about 190 degrees. The pilot then turned downwind to about 160 to 170 degrees. The aircraft subsequently departed controlled flight and impacted terrain. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Australia.
