NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 1, 2003, about 0215 universal coordinated time (UTC), a Piper PA-23-250 Aztec, VH-WAC, collided with terrain and caught fire shortly after takeoff from Mareeha Aerodrome, Queensland, Australia. The pilot/owner was operating the airplane under the provisions of the Australian Civil Aviation Regulations. The pilot and four passengers sustained fatal injuries; the airplane was destroyed. The personal cross-country flight was en route to Roma, Queensland, Australia. The accident is under the jurisdiction of and is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
