NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 26, 2003, about 0831 UTC, a Fairchild FH-227B, Argentinean registration LV-MGV, operated by CATA Linea Aérea, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ezeiza-Ministro Pistarini Airport, Buenos Aires, Argentina, while on a domestic cargo flight. Instrument meteorological condition prevailed at the time and an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed. The airplane was destroyed and the pilot, co-pilot, and three passengers were fatally injured. The flight was destined for Camba Punta Airport, Corrientes, Argentina and was originating at the time. Information received from, Junta de Investigaciones de Accidentes de Aviacion Civil (JIAAC), stated that shortly after takeoff from runway 17 the pilot indicated they wanted to return to the airport. The air traffic controller then cleared them to return to the airport and land on runway 17. In the process of returning to the airport the airplane lost altitude and crashed on a golf course. A post crash fire consumed the airplane. The left propeller was found in feathered position and the right engine appeared to be developing full power. The landing gear and flaps were found in the retracted position. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Argentina.
