NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 8, 2003, about 1059 Atlantic standard time, a Short Brothers Skyvan SC7, Guyana registration, 8R-GMC, registered to and operated by Trans Guyana Airways as a domestic charter passenger and cargo flight, crashed shortly after takeoff from Georgetown, Guyana. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The pilot, copilot and three passengers sustained serious injuries, and a flight attendant and one passenger received fatal injuries. The flight was originating at the time of the accident. The Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) stated that the flight was a charter flight supporting mining operations, and the airplane had just taken off from Ogle Aerodrome (SYGO) near Georgetown, Guyana, en route to Ekereku Bottom with cargo and passengers on board. Within a minute after takeoff, at an altitude of about 200 to 300 feet, the pilot declared an emergency, stating that he intended to land the airplane in a cane field. During the landing, the airplane impacted the bank of a canal in the vicinity of the field, incurring substantial damage. According to the DGAC official, preliminary indications were that the right engine was not developing power at impact. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Guyana.
