NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 10, 2003, at 1530 UTC, N6473D, a Cessna 172N, N6473D, a training flight, was substantially damaged at Coleman Army Airfield in Mannheim, Germany. The student pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The airplane was owned and operated by the Coleman Aero Club, located in Mannheim. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a VFR flight plan was filed. The local flight originated from Coleman Army Airfield. The pilot reported in a written statement that following several full stop landings, he decided to do a touch-and-go. After landing and beginning the takeoff portion of the touch-and-go, he decided to abort the takeoff because he felt a vibration in the airplane. The pilot reported that he applied the wheel brakes, but inadvertently did not close the throttle. He reported that the airplane did not seem to slow at all. After he had gone beyond the end of the runway, he realized that he was not going to be able to stop before hitting a fence. He then pulled the yoke aft in an attempt to takeoff. The airplane did not get airborne, but struck a fence. Aero club personnel reported that the airplane left dual skid marks for the last approximately 2,000 feet of runway and approximately 300 feet of sod leading to the point of impact with the perimeter fence.
