NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 4, 2004, about 1145 Atlantic standard time, a Cessna 208B of Venezuelan registration, YV-OCBL7, was destroyed upon impact with a mountain near Chimanta Tepoy, Venezuela. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed for the government use flight. The commercial-rated pilot and the commercial-rated copilot along with the 5 passengers were fatally injured. The flight originated from Ciudad Bolivar Airport, Soledad, Venezuela, at about 1016, earlier that day. According to the Direccion de Aeronautica Civil authorities, another airplane contacted the mishap airplane at about 1130, requesting a weather report. The crew of the mishap airplane reported circling the Luepa area at 11,500 feet msl in instrument conditions; Luepa Airport is located approximately 41 nautical miles northeast of where the airplane was located. The airplane impacted into a vertical rock face section 150 feet below the tip of a mountain while on an easterly heading. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Venezuela.
