NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On May 29, 2004, about 0900 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-32-301, N8165A, registered to and operated by a private individual, departed the runway during landing roll at Walkers Cay Airport, Walker Cays, Bahamas, while on a Title 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a VFR flight plan was filed and activated. The aircraft incurred substantial damage and the private-rated pilot and four passengers reported no injuries. The flight originated from North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport, North Palm Beach, Florida about 0800 that morning.
The pilot stated that the approach to runway 9 was normal and that he landed approximately 200 feet past the threshold. He further stated that the aircraft had no traction while braking so he applied maximum brakes and then began pumping the brakes. At the end of the runway, he veered to the right of the runway to avoid a drop off directly off the departure end. The airplane departed the runway to the right impacting a sand dune with the right main gear causing the right main landing gear and nose gear to collapse.
Witnesses to the accident report the airplane landing approximatly 3/4 down the length of the 2500 foot runway.
