NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 16, 2004, about 0835, eastern standard time, a Cessna 208, Panamanian registration HP-1397APP, registered to and operated by AeroPerla, as an air taxi flight, struck trees during a force landing near Panama City, Panama. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and flight plan information was not available. The airplane incurred substantial damage. The commercial-rated pilot and the commercial-rated co-pilot along with the five passengers received minor injuries. The flight originated from Marcos A. Gelabert International Airport, Albrook, Panama, about 0830, that morning. Preliminary information received from the government of Panama indicated the airplane had a loss of engine power minutes after takeoff. The pilot radio the control tower of the situation and attempt to return to the airport. He was unable to reach the airport and elected to perform emergency landing on active road. Due to on coming vehicles the pilot was forced to direct the airplane off to the side of the road were it incurred damage with tress before coming to a stop. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Panama.
