NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 25, 2004, about 0730 hours, Tanzanian registration 5H-AXL, a Cessna 208B airplane, a charter flight, lost engine power during cruise flight and collided with the ground during the forced landing at Loiborsoit Village, in the Simanjiro District of Arusha, Tanzania. The pilot and nine passengers were not injured. The aircraft was substantially damaged. There was no fire. The flight originated at Arusha and destined for Ruaha, Tanzania. Shortly after the flight reach a cruise altitude of 12,500 feet msl, the pilot reported he heard a loud bang and thereafter he experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot immediately switched on the ignition, but the engine did not restart. He set the power level to IDLE, at the same time checking the Ng which read 0%. Attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful. A forced landing was made into a field where the nose gear collapsed. The Pratt & Whitney PT6A-114A engine, serial no. PCE 19279, had 2400 hours since overhaul, accrued 6750 hours since new, and had a total of 7800 cycles. The engine had accumulated 4339.7 hours and 4762 cycle since it was last overhauled in September 2002. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Tanzania, Accident Investigation Branch.
