NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 14, 2004, about 0730 coordinated universal time, a Bell 206B, Australian registry VH-PHF, landed near Alice Springs, Australia, without incident after a loss of power to the drive train. The Australian-certificated pilot, flight medic, and three patients were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the medical evacuation flight that originated from a remote location destined for a hospital in Alice Springs. According to the Australian Government, the helicopter was cruising at 80 knots and 500 feet agl, when the pilot felt a vibration develop, heard a "loud bang," and experienced a drop in main rotor torque. The pilot immediately entered an autorotation, declared an emergency with air traffic control, and completed a successful forced landing. Examination of the wreckage revealed that the "Kaflex driveshaft between the engine free-wheeling unit and the main transmission had failed." This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Australia. Additional information may be obtained from: Bureau of Air Safety Investigation P.O.
