NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 8, 2005, about 1400 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-31-310, N440VC, ran off the runway into brush when directional control was lost during landing following failure of the nose landing gear tire, at Crooked Island, Bahamas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. The private-rated pilot was not injured and the aircraft received substantial damage. The flight originated from Nassau, Bahamas, the same day, about 1230. The pilot reported to Bahamian Civil Aviation Authorities that during landing at Colonel Hill Airport, Crooked Island, Bahamas, the nose landing gear tire failed. The airplane ran off the runway and collided with brush. The nose gear tire was replaced and the airplane was ferried to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for repairs. Examination of the airplane by maintenance personnel in Fort Lauderdale showed the airplane had incurred substantial damage to both wings. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of the Bahamas. Any further information pertaining to this accident may be obtained from: Manager of Flight Standards, Bahamas P.O.
