NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 26, 2005, about 0800 coordinated universal time, a Bell 206B, HB-XQO, was destroyed when it impacted mountainous terrain near Sirnach, Switzerland. The certificated pilot and three passengers were fatally injured. The local "heli-skiing" flight departed Sirnach, Switzerland, and the intended destination was the Steingletscher Glacier, in the surrounding mountains. According to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of Switzerland, the helicopter struck mountainous terrain at an elevation of 10,400 feet and was destroyed. Examination of photographs revealed the helicopter wreckage was fragmented, and the debris field was scattered across, and perpendicular to, the fall line of a steep snow- and ice-covered slope. A photograph of the area, taken about 8 minutes before the accident, showed foggy/cloudy conditions around the site, with mountain peaks obscured by clouds. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Switzerland.
