NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 4, 2005, at 1424 universal coordinated time, a Hughes 369D, Swedish registration SE-HVY, was substantially damaged when it collided with terrain after takeoff from Hangelosa, Sweden. The pilot received minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local flight. During the takeoff, at an altitude of approximately 200 to 300 feet, the pilot reported a loud bang and complete loss of engine power. He initiated an autorotation, which resulted in a hard landing. During the landing, the main rotor blades flexed down and severed the tailboom. The helicopter then rolled onto its side and came to rest. Initial examination of the engine revealed that the compressor exhibited internal damage and could not be rotated. There were noted outward dents on the compressor air discharge tubes and on the outer combustion case. The N2 power turbine rotor turned freely by hand and was continuous to the main rotor. The engine was further disassembled and several components were retained for further examination. The investigation is under the control and jurisdiction of the Swedish Government.
