NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 24, 2006, about 1100 local time, a Cessna 208B, Ecuadorian registration HC-BXD, registered to an operated by Atesa Aero Taxis Ecuatorianos S.A., Quito, Ecuador, as a non-scheduled domestic air taxi flight, crashed following a loss of engine power, while departing from Cuenca Airport, Cuenca, Ecuador, en route to Macas, Ecuador. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed. The airplane incurred substantial damage. The commercial-rated pilot, airline transport-rated copilot, and 7 passengers received serious injuries. Five passengers received fatal injuries. The flight was originating at the time of the accident. According to information obtained from the Ecuadorian Subdireccion de Aviacion Civil, the flight crew reported that everything had been normal prior to, and during the takeoff. During the initial climb, while at an altitude of about 300 feet AGL, at the end of the runway, over a heavily populated area, the flight crew reported that there was a noise, followed by an immediate and total loss of engine power, and an associated high engine ITT. The airplane descended, impacting the roof of a factory building, incurring substantial damage. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Ecuador.
