NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 29, 2005, exact time unknown, a Schweizer 269D helicopter, PH-HHB, was undamaged following a forced landing from a hover. The certificated pilot and two passengers were not injured. The local observation flight had not yet departed St. Jacobiparochie, Netherlands. According to the Dutch Transport Safety Board, the helicopter was at a 3-foot hover, when the pilot experienced a sudden right yaw, and a loss of tail rotor authority. The pilot landed the helicopter immediately, and there was no aircraft damage, nor injuries to any occupants or ground personnel. Examination of the helicopter revealed that the main rotor transmission pinion was fractured. The pinion was forwarded to a private laboratory in the Netherlands for examination, and then forwarded to the National Transportation Safety Board Materials Laboratory, Washington, D.C., for a subsequent examination. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of the Netherlands.
