NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 19, 2006, about 0650 coordinated universal time, a Cessna 208B, Norwegian registration LN-PBF, encountered icing conditions while in cruise flight near Floro, Norway, and was unable to maintain altitude. The two certificated commercial pilots were not injured. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight rules flight plan had been filed for the cargo flight that departed Flesland, Norway (ENBR), destined for Vigra, Norway (ENAL). The airplane was in cruise flight at 11,000 feet when the flight crew noted that ice was accumulating on the underside of the wings, and the airspeed decreasing. The pilot added full engine power and maintained an airspeed between 105 to 110 knots; however, the airplane descended at a rate of about 700 feet per minute, to an altitude of 9,000 feet. The pilot was able to return to ENBR, and landed without further incident. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Norway.
