NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 22, 2006, approximately 1100 UTC, a Piper PA-24-220T, serial number 3449168, German registration D-GREA, sustained substantial damage during an aborted takeoff at the Zell Am See Airport, Zell Am See, Austria. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The pilot and two passengers on board the airplane were not injured. The personal flight was originating at the time of the accident. According to investigators from the Federal Office of Transport, Accident Investigation Branch, Department Aviation, the pilot did not follow the maximum effort takeoff - 25 flaps procedure. The pilot began his takeoff run on runway 08 (2,165 feet long). Meteorological conditions at the time were 1,000 scattered, 10,000 broken and 15 kilometers visibility with light rain. Winds were 050 degrees magnetic at 6 knots. On reaching approximately two-thirds distance down the runway, acceleration stopped at 65 knots and was accompanied by a change in the sound of the engine. At that time, the pilot aborted the takeoff and applied heavy braking. The airplane drifted right and overran the end of the runway. On departing the paved surface, the airplane's landing gear was broken aft. The airplane slid along the wet ground until coming to rest 230 feet from the end of the runway. The investigation is under the jurisdiction and control of the Austrian government. any further information may be obtained from: Federal Office of Transport Accident Investigation Branch, Department Aviation Lohnergasse 9 1210 Wien (Vienna) AUSTRIA This report is for informational purposes only and contains information released by, or obtained from, the Austrian government.
