NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 30, 2006 about 0332 hours UTC, 5Y-SRK, de Havilland DHC-5, owned by Sky Relief Services and operated for the International Red Cross, crashed shortly after takeoff from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, Kenya. The three crewmembers received minor injuries. The aircraft was destroyed. There was fire. The destination was Baidoa, Somalia. The aircraft reportedly was on takeoff climb from runway 6 and was at a height of about 100 feet when the left engine lost power. The pilot feathered the engine, and attempted to return to the airport, but he was unable to maintain altitude. The airplane crashed about 6 kilometers from the airport. The investigation is being conducted by the Republic of Kenya, Ministry of Transport. The investigator-in-charge is Peter Wakahia, Chief Inspector of Accidents.
