NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 19, 2004 about 1629 hours local time, a South African registered airplane, ZS-OIY, a Searingen Metro SA-226TC, a chartered flight, collided with mountainous terrain, at Mount Kenya, Kenya. Instrument meteorlogical conditions pervailed and the airplane was on an instrument flight plan. The two pilots, and 12 passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was destroyed. The flight originated at Johannesburg, South Africa and the destination was Samburu, Kenya. The flight departed Johannesburg about 0600 hours local time with stops at Mozambique and Nairobi, Kenya. The flight took off from Nairobi about 1605 local time and was en route on a filed clearance of 15,000 feet direct to Samburu when the aircraft struck the 16,000-foot level of Mount Kenya which has a peak elevation of 17,058 feet. Witnesses described the mountain as enshrouded in clouds when the accident occurred. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Kenya, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Aircraft Accident Investigations Branch, Nairobi, Kenya. The investigator-in-charge is Peter Wakahia (254-2-824557/73/78/82). The US Accredited Representative is Dennis Jones, National Transportation Safety Board, Washington, D.C. (202-314-6000).
