NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

Flight crew reported that while climbing through 20,000 ft they heard a loud bang from the left side of the aircraft, B747. Parameter shift for the No. 2 engine (P&W JT9D-7R4G2) was also noted. The crew initiated an IFSD and accomplished an air turn-back without incident to (PVG) Pu Dong Airport, Shanghai, CN. Maintenance inspection of the No. 2 engine revealed that the 6th stage turbine blades were fractured just above the platform and all 6th stage NGV’s were missing. Moderate damage reported to the 5th stage turbine blades. Secondary damage reported to the aircraft pylon fairing, flap & horizontal stabilizer. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of China.
