NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On Dec 30, 2006, an Air New Zealand Boeing 767 experienced a No. 1 engine under cowl fire after landing at Auckland International Airport while stowing the thrust reverser. The flight crew pulled the No.1 fire handle, discharging a single fire bottle. The fire was extinguished without assistance from the Fire Department. Inspection of the engine revealed chaffing and a pin hole in the fuel manifold tube at the No. 4 o'clock position with its corresponding retaining clamp exhibiting extensive wear of the rubber cushion material allowing metal to metal contact. An inspection of the clamps was performed on Nov 22, 2006, approximately 350 hours and 70 Cycles prior to the event. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of New Zealand.
