NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 25, 2008, at 1257 UTC, a Piper PA-46-350P, N9245D, was struck by lightning during cruise flight. The airplane subsequently broke up and impacted terrain near Leguillac de Cercles, France. The airplane was destroyed and the pilot and passenger on board were killed. The personal flight departed Biarritz, France, and was en route to Coulommiers, France. The weather conditions at Biarritz, France at 1300 UTC was mostly cloudy skies, 6 miles visibility, winds 090 degrees at 16 knots, temperature 68 degrees Fahenheit (F), dew point 55 degrees F, and altimeter of 29.68 inches. The weather conditions for Coulommiers, France at 1300 UTC was scattered clouds, 6 miles visibility, winds variable at 15 knots, temperature 72 degrees F, dew point 50 degrees F, and altimeter of 29.83 inches. This investigation is under the jurisdiction and control of the French government.
