NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 7, 2007, at 6:20 AM Eastern Standard Time, Alitalia flight 508. an MD-11F equpped with GE CF6-80C2 engines lost of one half of the number one (left) engine thrust reverser (TR) during its landing roll at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York. The TR parts were scattered along the runway. It was reported that during the landing at JFK, on arrival from Milan, Italy, this aircraft experienced an un-commanded right yaw. The pilot corrected the aircraft's direction and the aircraft stopped uneventfully. The pilot reported that after thrust reverser closure, the alert "Reverse 1 Fault" illuminated. During the initial ground inspection, Alitalia maintenance personnel reported that on the number 1 pylon, the inboard thrust reverser was missing and the adjacent inboard pylon structure was damaged. Tires number 1 and 5 were damaged, as well as the left inboard flap. There were no injuries to the flight crew or passengers onboard. The portion of thrust reverser that separated was examined and the thrust reverser link pins were found fractured. The pins were not manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The information was given to the Italian Government Aviation Safety Agency (ANSV) for corrective action. The accident is being investigated by the Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo (ANSV) Via A. Benigni, 53 00156 Rome Italy Tel.: 39 068 207 8219 / 39 068 207 8200 Fax: 39 068 273 672 This report is for informational purposes only and contains only information obtained for, or released by, the Government of Italy.
