NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 23, 2007, a Quantas/Jetstar Airways Airbus A330-202, registration number VH-EBE,powered by General Electric (GE)CF6-80E1A4 turbofan engines, experienced an uncommanded No. 1 engine shutdown about 4 hours into its flight from Bangkok, Thailand to Melbourne, Austrailia. The flight crew attempted unsuccessfully to restart the engine. The flight diverted to Denpasar Airport, Indonesia. Post incident tests revealed that the No. 1 engine electronic fuel control unit (ECU) had malfunctioned. The ECU was sent to the component manufacturer, BAe, for investigation, and a short circuit in the input output module (IOM) circuit board was found. The short had developed from a microscopic air void in the insulation compound of the circuit board layers. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Australia.
