NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 20, 2010, at approximately 1814 Central Daylight Time (CDT), a Boeing 777-200, registration N773UA, operated by United Airlines as Flight 967, encountered severe turbulence while in cruise flight at FL340 (approximately 34,000 feet.) The flight was a regularly scheduled flight from Washington/Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. Initial data indicates that the airplane flew through an isolated cell of convective weather with a large area of storms about 40 miles to the north of the flight path. 17 passengers and 4 flight attendants experienced minor injuries during the event, and the airplane had minor damage to cabin interior components. The flight diverted to the Denver International Airport where it landed without further incident, and the injured occupants were transported to hospitals.
