NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 23, 2012, about 1315 eastern standard time, a Piper PA-28RT-201T, N4340G, was substantially damaged during a hard landing following an attempted takeoff at Boca Raton Airport (BCT), Boca Raton, Florida. The private pilot and the passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. According to the pilot, following the takeoff rotation and at about 100 feet above ground level (agl), the engine stopped producing power, the propeller wind milled, and the airplane stalled. The pilot executed the emergency procedure for a stall recovery without power and the airplane landed flat on all three wheels. The left main gear collapsed and the nose wheel was forced to the stowed position beneath the engine. Initial examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector revealed that both wings exhibited substantial damage. According to FAA records, the pilot held a private pilot certificate, with a rating for airplane single-engine land, airplane multi-engine land, and instrument airplane. The pilot had 4,100 total flight hours of which 3,900 hours were in the accident make and model.
