NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 21, 2013, about 0840 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-23-250, N625SR, was substantially damaged during a forced landing into trees 6 miles southwest of Perry, Florida. The airline transport pilot received minor injuries and was the sole occupant. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed for the segment between Orlando Executive Airport (ORL), Orlando, Florida, and Tallahassee Regional Airport (TLH), Tallahassee, Florida. The executive/corporate flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. According to the pilot, as he initiated a descent from a cruise altitude of 8,000 feet, he switched to the outboard fuel tanks. He then noted that his right engine began to lose power and then experienced a total loss of power. Next, he feathered the right propeller and selected the right mixture to idle cut off. The pilot informed Tallahassee Approach Control of the engine loss and was considering whether to continue his flight as planned to TLH. As he was making this determination the left engine experienced a total loss of power. He then declared an emergency with Tallahassee Approach Control and conducted a forced landing into the forest below. Initial examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector revealed substantial damage to both wings. According to FAA records, the pilot held an airline transport pilot certificate, with a rating for airplane single-engine land, airplane multi-engine land, and instrument airplane. The pilot had more than 29,000 total flight hours of which 236 hours were in the accident make and model.
