NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 25, 2013, about 1806 central daylight time, a Beech 35-C33A, N2713T, was substantially damaged during a forced landing following a total loss of engine power near Knoxville, Tennessee. The commercial pilot sustained serious injuries. The airplane was registered to a private individual and operated by the commercial pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the maintenance test flight. The flight departed from Downtown Island Airport (DKX), Tennessee, at 1756. According to the owner of the airplane, while in cruise flight he noticed a vibration in the engine. He turned on the fuel boost pump and the vibration stopped. He landed uneventfully and conducted an engine run up and observed that one of the magnetos was not operating correctly. He had the airplane inspected by a mechanic, and according to the repair facility, a fuel pump fitting was loose. The airplane was further examined and all performance parameters seemed normal. The airplane was returned to the pilot, and during departure the engine began to vibrate again. The pilot landed the airplane and returned it to the repair facility. The accident flight was a maintenance test flight performed by a mechanic/pilot. During the flight, the engine stopped and the pilot made an emergency landing in a field. Examination of the airplane by the local authorities revealed that it came to rest in a field in a residential area, and exhibited substantial damage. The airplane was recovered for further examination
